The Victoria Cross is the highest award for valour in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth, instituted by Queen Victoria in 1856. At present 1363 awards have been won for exceptional bravery in the face of the enemy.
My grandfather Harold Ackroyd won the award in 1917 at the start of the Battle of Passchendaele.
I inherited the medal set in 1988. This is his story.
